Complaint
Our company is unable to be productive in our business due to shortage of chick supply in the market, caused by delays by the Government (Ministry of Lands and Agriculture) to approve us to import chicks and fertilized eggs for broiler farming.
Status note
Botswana reoprted that production has stabilized, supported by capacity expansions within local hatcheries towards the end of 2025.
Currently, there is no widespread shortage of day-old chicks in the market, and supply conditions have improved significantly. In this regard, the reported NTB may no longer be applicable.
Progress update note
On 23rd April 2026, Bootswana Focal point reported that the reported this challenge is a global phenomenon, largely driven by outbreaks of avian influenza, which disrupted the supply of fertile eggs and, consequently, chick production.
At the national level, Botswana’s chick supply is primarily supported by two hatcheries, Ross Breeders Botswana and Irvine’s Botswana. During the period between March and July 2025, the country experienced a significant shortage, prompting coordinated engagements between the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture, industry players, the Botswana Poultry Association, and Business Botswana. These engagements focused on ensuring fair and practical allocation of available chicks between commercial and small-scale producers. As part of these efforts, the Poultry Liaison Committee (PLC), a multi-stakeholder body including Business Botswana, continued to assess and regulate applications for the importation of hatching eggs and day-old chicks. Import restrictions have been cautiously applied due to biosecurity concerns, particularly the risk of introducing avian influenza into the country.
It is worth noting that production has since stabilized, supported by capacity expansions within local hatcheries towards the end of 2025. Additionally, seasonal fluctuations, particularly during winter months, may temporarily affect productivity.Currently, there is no widespread shortage of day-old chicks in the market, and supply conditions have improved significantly. In this regard, the reported NTB may no longer be applicable. Ongoing monitoring and stakeholder engagement remain in place to ensure continued stability in the sector.
